 United We Stand

Lewes Bonfire Council , which acts as a forum for the town's seven Bonfire Societies, urges people living outside the town not to try to attend the annual 5 November [unless a Sunday] celebrations.  The event is a Lewes tradition going back many years and allows the people of the town to celebrate the ancient tradition of Bonfire.

Roads in the town are closed, meaning that there are no parking facilities. Those using public transport are likely to find that it is very crowded and that they will have to queue for long periods before arriving in Lewes. The journey home could be even more horrendous. This can be an unpleasant experience, particularly when it is cold or raining - which is likely in November. Lewes Bonfire is a particularly unsuitable event for younger children, who are unlikely to get a view of the celebrations, and who may find the event confusing and frightening. Children in pushchairs and buggies are particularly vulnerable to injury due to the denisty of the crowds.

Lewes Bonfire Council, Lewes District Council, Sussex Police and St John Ambulance, together with the other emergency services, form Lewes Bonfire Safety Group. The Group works throughout the year to minimise risks and reduce injuries and accidents to the public. As part of this approach, the existing Lewes Street Drinking Prohibition Order will be enforced, with alcohol being seized wherever appropriate.

We know from many years' experience that the larger the crowds, the more uncomfortable it can become for spectators, and we therefore urge people from outside the Lewes locality to celebrate in their own area.

For any further details, contact Superintendent Cliff Parrott of Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 extension 60224, who is responsible for the policing of the ebvent, or contact Lewes Bonfire Council via e-mail at BoncoSecretary@Bonco.org.uk

IMPORTANT NOTICE

Although a great deal of effort is directed into the safety aspects of Lewes Bonfire Night, fire and fireworks remain potentially dangerous. All persons should carefully note that attendance at Lewes Bonfire Night will constitute volenti non fit injuria, that is to say you will be deemed to have accepted any risk of injury or damage whatsoever, and no claim in respect thereof will lie against the organiser.
